Star Wars alum Daisy Ridley is ditching her all-powerful lightsaber (Luke Skywalker style) in favor of a bone-crunching axe to take on the dark forces in her next big screen feature. Vertical has released a thrilling and fear-inducing first trailer for Zak Hilditch’s upcoming zombie thriller We Bury the Dead, which debuted to rave reviews following its world premiere at the 2025 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival (SXSW) in March. The film currently holds an 89% approval score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, suggesting that it is one to watch out for as it shuffles closer to its theatrical release — that is to say, those in the United States might want to consider circling Jan. 2, 2026, in their calendars as that is the date that the undead will rise.
Ridley stars in We Bury the Dead as Ava Newman, a desperate young woman who embarks on a dangerous operation to locate her missing husband after a catastrophic military experiment goes horribly awry and ravages the land. Hoping to find him alive in the midst of the chaos, Ava joins a “body retrieval unit” team, but her search for her spouse takes a chilling turn when the corpses she is handling start showing signs of life. The trailer (shared below) promises a pulse-pounding and intense ride that will see Ava face all kinds of horrors on her search and rescue mission, while delving deep into the themes of grief, loss, and the undead.
