Season 13 episode 1 starts off the season laying out everything that has happened since the last time we saw the intelligence unit. Voight is desperately trying to help reinstate the team, but Commander Delvin was putting up a fight to avoid signing papers.

As Voight states, crime rates have skyrocketed since the unit was disbanded so it’s not too clear why the commander was dragging his feet to sign the papers.

Burzek were clearly enjoying their married life before Ruzek was pulled away to his foot beat. For the most part of this episode it was tough to watch Burgess not being able to do her thing, it was clearly weighing heavy on her.

In true Chicago PD style Voight catches a case that involves the death of a woman he was talking to moment before; I truly think he’s at his best when he is trying to get justice for someone he knows. This time is no different. As usual Voight goes against his superiors orders to catch Aggie’s killer. His first call is to Ruzek to rope him into searching for their suspect, which was unsurprising as Ruzek has taken up that second hand man role since Olinsky died.

Arienne Mandi’s character introduction as Eva Imani is arguably one of my favourite introductions in the entire 13 seasons. Right from the jump you could tell that she was a perfect match for the intelligence unit.

Kim being brought into the investigation by Voight truly did show that no matter whether the intelligence unit is official or not, they will always be a family who has each other’s backs. Kim’s fight with D-heart gave me heart palpitations, especially when the shots were fired. Thankfully it was Voight having Kim’s back but for a moment I really did think Kim had been shot.

I loved the fact that Imani jumped straight into having Voight’s back regardless of not really knowing who he was, the night-time meet up with Ruzek and Atwater to catch Rapture really showed how well she was going to fit into the team and with Kiana Cook switching stations it was clear Imani would be asked to fill in that spot.

Voight using the stolen police guns as a bargaining chip was a perfect was of brining intelligence back, as much as Voight tried to play it by the book it was clear Commander Delvin was never going to sign off on the unit. The Intelligence unit has never been a 100% clean unit, but they have always been and will continue to be the best at their jobs. Them being given all clear to return to their roles by a less conventional way sums the unit up perfectly.

One thing that I love about the One Chicago shows is that even though characters have died or left the show many seasons before they will always mention them. For fans who have loved the show since the beginning, watching Voight place Alvin Olinsky’s hat back in its pride of place once Intelligence was reinstated.

The end of this episode is great, it gives viewers hope for what is to come in future episodes and joy watching Torres and Burgess getting their badges back. Plus for those eagle eyed Burzek fans, Adam gives Burgess a small kiss on the head after she gets her badge back. This was in my opinion the perfect start to the season.
