Gen V Season 2 Episode 5 Review: The Kids Are Not Alright

After completing Gen V Season 2 Episode 5, it dawns on me that half the season is gone and we’re entering the final stretch.

I’ve never been one to care about release schedules, but I must admit that the speed with which streaming shows come out does not do them favors.

You wait for two years to season, only for it to end in a little over a month. The following week, something comes out, and you forget everything about the previous show.

Anyway, Gen V Season 2, Episode 5, “The Kids Are Not Alright,” tries to accelerate the Elmira mystery by taking us to the scene of the crime. It’s a welcome trip because this place has been a mystery for so long, yet it always comes up in one conversation or another.

I must admit that I’m not impressed. It’s just a regular prison setting, with nothing exciting about it. Or, we haven’t found out yet.

However, it’s clear that after what transpires, nothing will ever be the same again. Not only can Marie control something in the blood composition, she can bring people to life.

Now, that’s impressive by its own right, but the vice versa is the most lethal development: she can kill as easily.

I was unsure where the show was taking Marie’s story this season, and while this development changes things, it still doesn’t fit into the plan of taking down Homelander.

At this rate, Homelander is almost invincible, and Marie’s long journey towards mastering her powers feels ill-planned. The Boys ends next year, so Marie has a limited time frame.

Or maybe they have an entirely different plan to take out Homelander that doesn’t involve her.

Arguably, the episode’s star is none other than our dear Dean Cipher.

We need to know what his power is sooner rather than later because it’s driving me insane.

The episode introduces another mystery as we follow Cipher at home, and we learn that he’s been hooking up with Sister Sage. That came out of left field.

Even more surprising is that there is someone he’s taking care of who was seriously burned. We don’t know who it is, but I suspect it’s someone very close to him, and he could be the reason Cipher is pushing Marie so hard.

Maybe he’s planning on using her powers to cure the mysterious man of his affliction.

Given that Cipher and God U go way back, could this be Thomas Godolkin? Are they related in some way?

Godolkin might have tried to use Compound V on himself, and things did not turn out the way he wanted. But since it worked with Marie, all’s well that ends. He might be able to reverse the effects.

    Sam Riordan Goes Home

Since Golden Boy died, Sam and Cate have not felt like an integral part of the story this season.

Even Marie’s crusade to free her from Elmira feels contrived. No one really cares about her anymore, not after the events of the Gen V Season 1 finale.

It can be hard to redeem some people, and I’m afraid Sam and Cate are beyond redemption.

Even his trip back home does nothing to make him feel the part.

For all practical purposes, Sam is a child. He lacks the emotional maturity necessary to join this crusade, and he would be of limited value at best.

Have you ever tried conspiring with a child? The gravity never registers, and everything seems like a joke.

Gen V’s writers need to come up with something better for Sam and Cate or cut them loose.

But at least he got to learn a little about his family history and also show his mother where he saw his first vagina.

Side note: I’m hollering as I write that last sentence because it was so childishly funny for Sam to just blurt that out.

“The Kids Are Not Alright” attempts to set up an explosive back half by ramping up Marie’s powers to full gear and shedding some light on Dean Cipher’s motive.

It’s that episode that would be described as a filler, but is important nonetheless.

But as we proceed, the show must leave these mysteries behind. Elmira has run its course, and so have Cipher’s secrets.

    Stray Thoughts

    • Emma Meyer and the big buff jock are so cute together. I’m sorry, but anyone who treats my girl nicely gets a tick in my notebook. Come to think of it, Gen V has some really nice romantic pairings.
    • This might be too early to be calling, but could we see Marie enter her villain era? One could almost see her jumping in anticipation as she awaited the test of her newfound strength at Elmira.

She might be singlehandedly to blame for everyone’s fate. She didn’t hide her intentions that well.

    • I hope that whatever is happening in Gen V this season will factor into the final season of The Boys. They botched the virus storyline badly.
    • Does Vought have a department that deals with Supe destruction? Sam’s trip back home ruined a perfectly good road.

Over to you, Gen V fanatics. What do you think Cipher is planning? Have we seen the full extent of Marie’s powers yet? Chime in in the comments section.
