Like too many different TV characters, Gunsmoke’s Chester Goode seemingly vanished into skinny air. Dennis Weaver final performed the character on the TV western in Season 9’s “Bently.” That episode, at the very least, provides Chester a starring position: He involves the help of a husband and spouse after the husband makes a deathbed homicide confession Chester thinks is a bid to make life higher for his soon-to-be widow.
Within the subsequent episode, although, Chester has gotten out of Dodge, so to talk, and nobody appears to acknowledge his disappearance. It was a confounding finish for a personality who grew to become a fan-favorite deputy to James Arness’ Marshal Matt Dillon. Weaver performed the character for eight and a half seasons, from 1955 to 1964, and gained an Emmy Award for the half in 1959.
