Werewolf movies, typically synonymous with creature features, were, at one point, among the most popular kinds of horror movies. Movies like An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, and Wolf are all considered horror classics.

However, technological advancements and the rise of CGI have meant that the genre has found itself at a crossroads of sorts. Many directors and bigger studios are focused on big blockbuster creature features with sleek and visually polished special effects, like Jurassic Park and Godzilla. As a result, werewolf movies and their more physically tangible, visceral style have witnessed a decline.

That’s not to say they vanished completely – over the last decade, we’ve seen some fantastic entries into the genre, with movies like The Cursed and Animal focusing more on emotional storytelling while Werewolves Within and Wolf Cop 2 took a more humorous approach.

From highly anticipated “elevated horrors” to low-budget potential indie gems, we’re looking at 5 Werewolf movies scheduled for 2026 and beyond.

    ‘Werewolf Hunt’

    March 1, 2026

Werewolf Hunt will see an elite group of trained hunters track the ultimate big game – a werewolf. Set in a remote, shadowy wilderness, the film will blend survival tension with brutal creature horror, cleverly flipping the predator-prey dynamic on its head.

    The Hunter Becomes the Hunted

Werewolf Hunt is written by Josh Ridgway, who also wrote the 2019 werewolf horror short Howl starring Sean Patrick Flanery. Based on the information available, viewers can expect “bone-crushing combat, chilling suspense, and moral choices that weigh on the soul as the hunt reaches its bloody climax.”

    ‘Dead Howling’

    October 31, 2026

Dead Howling is a dark fantasy movie that will follow a zombie-hunting werewolf who finds purpose after running into two humans and vowing to protect them on their quest for sanctuary.

‘Dead Howling’ Is Eyeing Up a Halloween Release Date

Scheduled for release on Halloween next year, it has been announced that Temuera Morrison, who is best known for appearing in Kiwi cult classic Once Were Warriors and as Boba Fett in The Book of Boba Fett, will be starring alongside Ryan Kwanten and Tom Burlinson.

    ‘Werwulf’

    December 25, 2026

Scheduled for release on Christmas Day, 2026, Werwulf is an upcoming period horror movie co-written and directed by Robert Eggers. Set in the 13th Century and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe, Eggers has been quoted as saying it’s the “darkest script he has ever written.”

Robert Eggers Has Proven Himself To Be a Director To Watch

Making his directorial debut with 2015’s critically acclaimed The Witch, Robert Eggers has proven himself to be one of the most exciting directors working today, spearheading the recent elevated horror trend with movies like 2019’s Lighthouse and last year’s Nosferatu.

His strict attention to period detail and knack for creating dark, dread-filled atmospheres are traits destined to make Werwulf one of the scariest and most memorable horror movies of 2026.

    ‘Wolfland’

    Release Date TBD

Pierce Brosnan’s upcoming werewolf movie will see his own son, Sean Brosnan, handling direction duties. It has been described as an “epic odyssey” and a “revenge thriller” with the plot centering around a young teenager who employs the duties of a legendary but reluctant werewolf hunter (played by Pierce Brosnan) to track down the beast that attacked him.

    Expect Jaw-Dropping Creature Designs

Andy Serkis’ The Imaginarium Studios will be handling effects and creature designs, which suggests the movie will be a cut above the average werewolf flick in terms of visual spectacle, considering the studio is responsible for creating some of Hollywood’s most impressive character designs, including those featured in Deadpool & Wolverine, Godzilla and Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. The movie is still in pre-production, aiming for a 2026 release.

    ‘Shiver’

    Release Date TBD

If horror is not really your thing, but you’re still enthralled by the mystique of the werewolf, perhaps Shiver will be more your thing. Boasting an impressive cast including Greg Kinnear, Maddie Ziegler, Levi Miller, Sofia Wylie, Iman Vellani, Lyon Daniels, Alexander Ludwig, Ross Butler, and Alicia Witt, Shiver is an upcoming romantic fantasy movie based on the young adult novel of the same name by Maggie Stiefvater.

    Production Has Currently Been Halted

It will follow the story of Grace, who was saved by a yellow-eyed wolf as a child from a pack of wolves, and later falls in love with a young man named Sam with identical yellow eyes. The plot centers on their forbidden love as Sam must fight to remain human when winter arrives, a struggle that threatens to consume him entirely, while Grace works to help him avoid his werewolf fate. Unfortunately, since entering post-production in 2025, work on the project has been halted due to the production company’s failure to fulfill its funding commitments, meaning that a release date has yet to be confirmed.
