The ’80s and ’90s were a golden age for R-rated thrillers, but they weren’t all hits. One of the more divisive thrillers from the 90s, which starred Demi Moore alongside two Hollywood legends, is back on free streaming, and it’s a major hit. The film in question tried to cash in on the success of hits like Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction, and Dressed to Kill. However, it failed to capture the attention of audiences and was slated by most critics, despite its interesting and question-raising premise. If you hadn’t guessed by now, the film is none other than Indecent Proposal, and it’s currently a free streaming hit.
Indecent Proposal is currently streaming for free on Pluto TV. The film is flying up Pluto’s charts, as it is the ninth most popular movie on the free streaming platform, at the time of writing. Released in 1993, Indecent Proposal was based on the novel by Jack Engelhard and adapted for the screen by Amy Holden Jones. Adrian Lyne directed the movie, which starred the late Robert Redford, Woody Harrelson, Seymour Cassel, Oliver Platt, Billy Bob Thornton, Rip Taylor, and Billy Connolly, alongside the aforementioned Moore. The plot is one of those rare stories that truly makes you think about what you’d do in that situation, with the official synopsis reading:
“David (Woody Harrelson) and Diana Murphy (Demi Moore) are a loving couple with a bright future. David is a talented architect; Diana is a top-notch real estate agent. But when the recession hits, their finances take a nosedive. In a last-ditch effort to save their dream home, they head to Las Vegas to win their mortgage money gambling. After they lose everything, a mysterious billionaire (Robert Redford) offers the solution to their money problems: $1 million — if he can sleep with Diana.”
Despite its star-studded cast and interesting premise, Indecent Proposal was slated by critics and proved divisive among audiences. It holds a low 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences appeared to enjoy the film slightly more, although it has its fair share of haters, as it holds a 47% audience rating. User reviews range from praising the film’s “tense action” and “intelligent plot,” to calling it an “unnecessarily horny mess.” However, most people agree that Moore, Harrelson, and Redford all turned in great performances.
‘Indecent Proposal’ Is a Multi-Razzie Award Winner
While the film has gained a slight cult following and only seemed to be a middling failure, Indecent Proposal was absolutely slated upon its release. The movie was nominated for multiple Razzie Awards and even won three.
Robert Redford and Demi Moore were both nominated for their performances, and Woody Harrelson won Worst Supporting Actor. Indecent Proposal also won Worst Screenplay and Worst Picture. However, in the years since, Indecent Proposal has come to be seen as a Razzie winner that wasn’t deserving of the dishonor. Along with the likes of Striptease, the film has been reanalyzed upon contemporary viewings as being a misunderstood hit.
