A decade after its release in theaters, the intense A24 action-horror film directed by Rebel Ridge‘s Jeremy Saulnier is turning up the volume on free streaming. Starring the late Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) and Patrick Stewart, the brutal and bloody thriller is a pulse-pounding experience that has to be seen to be believed (if you dare). The film follows a punk rock band that is trapped in a venue by white supremacists, forced to fight their way out of a deadly nightmare that doesn’t let up until the credits roll.
Green Room is now available to stream for free on Tubi as of October 1. The 2016 film debuted to rave reviews from critics, garnering a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As audiences revisit the ever-so-relevant thriller, it’s a stark reminder that Saulnier has quietly been one of the best filmmakers to blend horror with action in recent memory. With inspired direction and characters easy to root for, Green Room has long solidified itself as an intense experience that more than lives up to the rock-solid premise.
Green Room is bolstered by an impressive cast, led by one of Yelchin’s best performances. The cast features Stewart, Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later), Alia Shawkat (Search Party), Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders), and Callum Turner (Masters of the Air). A24 released Green Room as the studio/distributor began to break out as one of the best in the business, with Best Picture winner Moonlight also debuting in 2016. After collaborating with Netflix in Rebel Ridge, Saulnier is set to return to A24 in the upcoming thriller October. Read the official synopsis:
Down on their luck punk rockers The Ain’t Rights are finishing up a long and unsuccessful tour, and are about to call it quits when they get an unexpected booking at an isolated, run-down club deep in the backwoods of Oregon. What seems merely to be a third-rate gig escalates into something much more sinister when they witness an act of violence backstage that they weren’t meant to see. Now trapped backstage, they must face off against the club’s depraved owner, Darcy Banker (Stewart), a man who will do anything to protect the secrets of his nefarious enterprise. But while Darcy and his henchmen think the band will be easy to get rid of, The Ain’t Rights prove themselves much more cunning and capable than anyone expected, turning the tables on their unsuspecting captors and setting the stage for the ultimate life-or-death showdown.
Jeremy Saulnier Is Returning to A24 With a Buzzy New Thriller
Jeremy Saulnier is filming his next project, but don’t expect it to be a Rebel Ridge sequel. The director is going back to his roots with A24’s October, a Halloween-themed horror thriller starring Chase Sui Wonders and Sophie Wilde. In late 2024, Saulnier talked about pivoting from his Netflix action flick to another original film more in line with the tone of Green Room. That said, October sounds more fun than the brutally tense 2016 thriller starring Anton Yelchin.
“I’m currently writing something that’s a little more in the Green Room universe. Because with Rebel Ridge, I was exploring a new side. I was just tired of everything I do being oppressive. But I’ve kinda gone back. It has to do with music and Halloween and fun sh*t.”
The rest of the cast of October features Young Mazino (The Last of Us), Stephen Root (Barry), and Stanley Simons (The Iron Claw). Plot details are scarce, but the film has been described as a “fugitive thriller” that takes place during Halloween.
