When it comes to time travel, there are several TV shows and movies that instantly come to mind. Back to the Future, Quantum Leap, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. One that may not be quite as forthcoming is the massively underrated and frequently forgotten Continuum, a sci-fi show with a completely unique take on the concept that has been unseen for too long. Now that can all change as the series is available to watch for free on Plex.
Set in a future where America has annexed Canada – something that a certain person of power would certainly do if given the chance – a terrorist organization known as Liber8 use a time travel device to go back in time to 2012, but inadvertently drag police officer Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols) along with them. Trapped in a new world, Cameron makes it her task to track down the members of the group and prevent the atrocities of the future she left behind. The full synopsis of the series reads:
“Detective Kiera Cameron is a cop from the year 2077 who was raised to rely on technology more than anything else, even herself. Now she and a group of deadly criminals called Liber8 are trapped in present-day Vancouver. Cameron needs to stop Liber8 before it can take down the corporations which will one day rule the world — thus altering the course of the future and changing the 2077 that Cameron calls home. She enlists the help of a teenage tech genius named Alec Sadler to help figure out a way to get her back to her own time, and she manages to work with the Vancouver Police Department with Detective Carlos Fonnegra to keep an eye on Liber8. With different ideals and backgrounds, Cameron and Fonnegra clash, but they trust each other, and Cameron is slowly learning to trust herself as well.”
The show delivers plenty of the usual twists on the characters seen in the future and then in the past, showing how timelines can be changed based on the decision made by each character. Created by Simon Berry, the mastermind behind another “canceled-too-soon” TV show, Warrior Nun, Continuum ran for three seasons before being granted one final run to wrap up its story. However, with the final two seasons delivering some of the best reviews of the entire series, it certainly ended its run on a bittersweet high.
‘Continuum’ Is One of the Best Time Travel Shows Ever Made
Continuum ended its four-season run in 2015, securing an aggregate 88% score from critics and 86% from audiences. Ten years later, new audiences are now able to discover (or rediscover) the series on Plex, and it is certainly worth the effort for anyone who loves a good, solid sci-fi yarn with a time travel element.
Hailed by some as “the best show to ever come out of Canada,” the series’ “habit of constantly being awesome” was enough to make its cancellation sting for those who had followed the story from the start. Some audiences even made particular note in recent reviews that they would love to re-watch the whole series, but were unable to due to it not being available on a streaming platform at the time. Thanks to Plex, Continuum is not only now available in the U.S., but it is also free, which is a nice little sweetener.
